Current Research:

Our lab’s research interests center on engineering stem cells and biomaterials to develop novel regenerative therapies for a variety of diseases, especially congenital anomalies. We have successfully combined tissue-engineering technologies with the most advanced fetal surgical techniques to develop biomaterial and stem cell-based treatments (including nanofibrous materials, fetal membrane, decelluarized extracellular matrix, iPSC-derived stem/progenitor cells, placenta-derived stem/progenitor cells) for devastating structural and genetic birth defects such as spina bifida, hemophilia and congenital diaphragmatic hernia. We have focused particularly on developing novel scaffolds and medical devices that are made of nanofibrous structures and/or chemically modified with biologically functional ligands to mimic native extracellular matrices, control body responses to injury and guide regeneration. We are also interested in developing off-the-shelf stem cell products or stem cell derived cell-free therapies. Currently, we are extensively using mouse, rat, guinea pig, rabbit and sheep models to develop and validate novel regenerative therapies, and are adapting these therapies to treat naturally occurring diseases in companion animals.
